Inspection at Durrës Prison finds 5 mobile phones in the sector where Erion Veliaj is being held

Morning inspection in Sector B

The inspection, according to publicly released information, was carried out by the structures of the General Directorate of Prisons. The operation led to the discovery of five mobile phones inside a sector that is supposed to be under increased supervision, raising questions about how the devices entered the institution’s premises.

At this stage, it is not known which of the people held in this sector the seized phones belong to. The lack of an immediate identification leaves open not only the question of the users, but also that of responsibility within the prison.

The devices are being sent to SPAK for examination

According to information reported by journalist Anila Hoxha, the phones were forwarded to SPAK through the BKH. They are expected to undergo examination at the special forensic laboratory.

This examination is expected to determine whether the mobile phones were used, by whom, and under what circumstances they ended up inside the prison. The investigation remains key, as the introduction of such devices into cells is not only a disciplinary issue, but also possible evidence of a failure of institutional oversight.

A series of cases adding to suspicions

The Durrës case is not isolated. Earlier, authorities also seized and sent Laert Haxhiu’s phone to SPAK.

Likewise, last week a phone was also found in Peqin Prison and it was sent to SPAK for verification. The repetition of these episodes in different penitentiary institutions increases doubts about the real effectiveness of inspections and security filters in prisons.

For the moment, the main issue remains the identification of the users of the five mobile phones and clarification of the chain that allowed their entry into the sector where high-profile detainees are being held.

Until the examination results are released, the most pressing question remains the security of the prisons themselves and the responsibility of the structures tasked with guaranteeing it.
