Albania’s Parliament convenes today at 10:00 in a plenary session that comes immediately after the country’s recent tense days. At the center of attention is expected to be the urgent interpellation with Interior Minister, while the opposition has signaled political clashes over the handling of the protests and the role of the State Police.

Parliament convenes after protests, urgent interpellation with the Interior Minister on the agenda

The first parliamentary session after tensions in the streets

This is the first session of Parliament to be held after the violent protests recorded in recent days, placing the parliamentary debate under increased political and public pressure.

In this climate, the focus is not expected to be only on parliamentary procedures, but also on how institutions have responded to developments on the ground.

Urgent interpellation for the Interior Minister

The third item on the agenda is the urgent interpellation with Minister of Internal Affairs Ervin Demo, requested by a group of Democratic Party MPs.

The debate is expected to focus on the management of the protests, the actions of the State Police and the reported clashes in recent days, issues for which the opposition has demanded political accountability in the parliamentary chamber.

Three more interpellations also on the agenda

In addition to the issue of order and security, the session agenda also includes two interpellations with Infrastructure and Energy Minister Enea Karakaçi, requested by MPs Ermal Pacaj and Tedi Blushi.

Tedi Blushi has also requested an interpellation with Finance Minister Petrit Malaj, widening the political clash beyond the developments of recent days.

Draft laws and the commission for territorial reform

Several draft laws are also expected to be reviewed in today’s session, while the agenda includes the draft decision on establishing the Special Parliamentary Commission for the second phase of the Administrative-Territorial Reform.

The inclusion of this draft decision at such a political moment could make the debate between the majority and the opposition even sharper, in a chamber where tensions are expected to run high.

Rama absent from the session

Prime Minister Edi Rama is not expected to be present at the plenary session, as he is in Budva, Montenegro, for an official meeting.

His absence leaves the weight of the day’s debate to the ministers called to interpellation and to the direct clash between the parliamentary groups.

The session begins at 10:00 and is expected to be accompanied by strong political tones between the majority and the opposition.

As the country remains under tension after the protests, attention will be on the answers the government gives in Parliament for its version of the management of the situation.
