SP seeks suspension of 20 DP MPs after chaos in Parliament, Ethics to decide today

Online meeting for a decision with political weight

The Ethics Secretariat in Parliament has been called to meet today at 10:00 to examine a request by a group of Socialist Party MPs for the suspension of 20 Democratic Party MPs.

The move comes after the previous day’s incident in the plenary session, where tension between the majority and the opposition escalated into physical clashes and the blocking of the podium. Beyond the procedure itself, the meeting is also seen as the next test of how Parliament manages political conflict inside the chamber.

Two-month suspension sought for 6 MPs

According to the request submitted by the socialists, a two-month suspension from Parliament is being sought for Flamur Noka, Belind Kelliçi, Edi Paloka, Fidel Kreka, Luçiano Boçi and Xhaferri.

The version presented by the majority accuses these MPs of physical attacks during the session. If approved, the measure would be one of the harshest disciplinary interventions against the opposition in this legislature.

14 other MPs face measures over blocking the podium

For 14 other Democratic MPs, the SP is seeking a 10-day suspension on the grounds that they took part in blocking the podium and obstructed the regular conduct of the plenary session.

The names included in this request are Gjin Gjoni, Bardh Spahia, Albana Vokshi, Elda Hoti, Xhelal Mziu, Gent Strazimiri, Enno Bozdo, Kastriot Piroli, Kliti Hoti, Flamur Hoxha, Arjan Ndoja, Ivi Kaso, Zija Ismaili and Blendi Himçi.

What happened in yesterday’s session

According to the version presented in the request, Flamur Noka physically attacked Parliament Speaker Niko Peleshi, as well as the head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla.

According to the same version, Democratic MP Fidel Kreka struck former minister Ervin Hoxha with the voting block. These episodes have been placed at the center of the request for severe disciplinary measures against the opposition.

The session continued and the majority passed the items on the agenda

Despite the chaos and clashes, the parliamentary session was not fundamentally interrupted. In the end, 6 draft laws and 3 draft decisions on the agenda were voted through.

Among them was the establishment of the Special Commission for the second phase of the Territorial Reform, a detail showing that the majority managed to move its agenda forward even in a tense political climate.

The decision of the Ethics Secretariat is expected to determine not only the disciplinary fate of the 20 opposition MPs, but also the tone of the next clash between the majority and the DP in Parliament.

In practice, it remains to be seen whether this mechanism will serve as an institutional standard for parliamentary order or as another instrument of force in the political battle between the sides.
