Erion Veliaj has refused food at Fier prison just one day after being transferred from Durrës, in a move being presented as a protest over the way his relocation was carried out.

Refusal of food after transfer to Fier
According to publicly released information, the Mayor of Tirana has begun a form of protest inside his cell by refusing food at the correctional institution in Fier.
This reaction is linked to his opposition to the transfer from Durrës prison, a move that is claimed to have been carried out without complete documentation. At this stage, there has been no detailed public clarification from the responsible institutions regarding the procedure followed.
Claims of an undocumented transfer
The core of Veliaj’s objection is tied to the version that the move to Fier was carried out without documentation. This shifts attention to the transparency of the prison administration and the way such decisions are justified for people with a high public profile.
In the absence of a full official position, it remains unclear on what basis the transfer was carried out and whether all relevant administrative procedures were respected.
Family visits in prison
During the morning, Veliaj was visited by his mother, who was carrying a bag of food.
A few hours later, his wife, Ajola Xoxa, also went to the prison premises together with their baby.
The case raises questions not only about Veliaj’s condition after the transfer, but also about the standard of transparency institutions apply when making sensitive decisions within the penitentiary system.
For the moment, what is known is that the refusal of food came immediately after the move to Fier prison, while institutional explanations about the circumstances of the transfer remain limited.
