Christa Pike, a death row inmate in the US state of Tennessee, has spoken for the first time after the failed attempt to execute her on September 30, when, according to her legal team, she survived even after being administered two doses of lethal injection. In a statement released on Friday, she describes a serious physical and psychological condition following the procedure, which did not end as authorities had planned.

First statement after the night of the execution

In the statement made public by her lawyers, Pike says she had not considered at all the possibility that she would still be alive after that night.

She says she continues to experience severe pain in different parts of her body and difficulty speaking. According to her statement, the problems include pain in her arms, hands and throat, while the consequences, as she describes them, are not only physical.

Health condition and consequences after the procedure

Pike says she is recovering, but stresses that the process is slow and far from a return to normal. In her statement, she draws a distinction between healing and being well, emphasizing that the trauma remains present.

According to her lawyers, after the incident she suffered from pneumonia, significant swelling in her arms and difficulty swallowing. She is currently continuing to receive medical care and is being kept isolated from other prisoners.

What happened on September 30

According to the version made public by the defense, Pike received two doses of pentobarbital during the execution procedure, but did not die and was then rushed to hospital in critical condition. She remained hospitalized for several days and was discharged on October 10, when she was returned to prison.

Her lawyers claim the execution team had difficulty finding a vein and used around 10 needles during the attempt. The procedure was halted after the injection of two doses failed to produce the result required by the execution system.

Criminal case and authorities’ response

Christa Pike was 18 when she took part in the murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in January 1995. According to the case file, she, along with her then-boyfriend Tadaryl Shipp and another girl, lured the victim to an isolated area, where she was then beaten and tortured to death.

Pike was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to death, while Shipp, who was 17 at the time of the crime, received life imprisonment.

After the failed execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee suspended other executions planned through 2026 and ordered an independent investigation into the incident. However, Pike’s death sentence remains in force. Two days before the scheduled date, the governor had refused a clemency request and the commutation of the sentence to life imprisonment.

The case has brought renewed attention to how lethal injection executions are carried out in the United States, especially when the procedure itself fails and raises serious questions about the system’s accountability.

At this stage, authorities have announced an investigation, while statements from the defense shed light on the consequences left by an execution that was not completed.
