The meeting of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Public Administration on the draft budget and fiscal package was dominated by a clash between the opposition and the majority, shifting the debate from figures and taxes to political accusations over justice, elections and the government.

Clash in Laws Committee Over Budget, Bylykbashi Demands Rama’s Resignation

The budget debate shifted to political accusations

Democratic Party MP Oerd Bylykbashi used the meeting to raise strong accusations against the government and justice institutions, referring to claims made public a day earlier by Erion Veliaj.

According to Bylykbashi, what has been made public raises suspicions of criminal offenses and should be followed by checks by the competent authorities. He also linked this debate to the draft budget, claiming that the tax burden on citizens will increase further.

Call for resignation and a caretaker government

In his position, Bylykbashi called for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the establishment of a caretaker government, arguing that only such a formula can guarantee free elections and stop state interference in the process.

He also made accusations against SPAK and the GJKKO, calling their independence into question. These remain political declarations by the opposition, made in a session where the focus was supposed to be the draft budget and the fiscal package.

Strong accusations against the justice system and the majority

Bylykbashi claimed that recent developments have exposed, in his view, pressure on justice institutions and their political use. He also spoke of double standards in the handling of different cases by prosecution bodies and the courts.

Along the same lines, he described the draft budget as a further burden on citizens, presenting it as part of a policy that, according to the opposition, raises taxes and narrows the economic room for families.

Manja rejects the scenario of a technical government

On the other hand, committee chair Ulsi Manja played down the opposition’s statements, calling them part of repeated political rhetoric. According to him, the majority has the obligation to continue work on draft laws and reforms linked to the European integration process.

Manja ruled out the possibility of a caretaker or technical government, stressing that the parliamentary majority has the numbers and that the constitutional architecture does not support the scenarios sought by the opposition.

The clash in the Laws Committee once again showed that the debate over the budget is taking place under the shadow of sharp political conflict, where accusations about justice and elections are taking the place of discussion about the concrete priorities of public finances.

In this climate, the draft budget and the fiscal package risk passing amid political noise, while questions about the real impact on taxes, spending and institutional accountability remain without clear answers.
