The package of measures also extends to shooting ranges, where checks will be carried out to determine whether rules on the use and storage of ammunition are being followed. In the same vein, authorities have warned of a stronger crackdown on illegal weapons and tougher criminal prosecution for violators.
However, deeper legal changes are not expected to come immediately. According to the plan made public, they include higher penalties, stricter control over ammunition and more frequent renewal of gun permits.
What is known about the attack
The shooting happened last week. According to the authorities’ account, the 14-year-old first killed his grandparents at the home where he lived and then went to school, where he opened fire.
Six other people were killed on the school premises, after which the perpetrator took his own life. Police said the weapon is suspected to have belonged to his grandfather.
Renewed debate over school safety
Investigators have claimed that the teenager had been exposed to violent content online and had used social media to learn about the use of firearms. These remain elements of the investigative line and do not diminish the main question over the real control of weapons and institutional responsibility.
The incident has reignited debate over gun ownership and school safety in Thailand, a country considered to have a high level of gun possession in Southeast Asia.
