Sofia Moreira de Sousa has taken charge of the European Union Delegation in Tirana, in a diplomatic move that comes at a sensitive moment for relations between Albania and the EU. The Portuguese diplomat succeeds Silvio Gonzato, who has completed his mandate in the country.
Formalization of the mandate at the Presidency
According to the official announcement, Moreira de Sousa is expected to present her credentials to President Bajram Begaj, a procedure that formalizes the start of her mandate as European Union ambassador to Albania.
The ceremony marks the official handover at the head of the EU Delegation in Tirana, a post of particular importance in relation to the country’s political and institutional developments.
Who is Sofia Moreira de Sousa
Before arriving in Tirana, Sofia Moreira de Sousa headed the European Commission Representation in Portugal, a post she took up in September 2021.
Earlier, she also served as EU ambassador and head of the European Union Delegation to the Republic of Cabo Verde, where she held the position for four years.
Replacing Silvio Gonzato
The Portuguese diplomat takes over from Silvio Gonzato, the Italian diplomat who has concluded his mandate in Albania.
