After more than 50 days of protest in front of his office, Prime Minister Edi Rama has publicly acknowledged that the discontent on the Boulevard cannot be treated as passing noise. At the meeting of the SP parliamentary group and the cabinet, he delivered a direct message to his own side: whoever minimizes this civic reaction, he said, risks “shrinking” politically.
A delayed acknowledgment after weeks of pressure
According to Rama’s statements, the protest that has continued for more than 50 days in front of the Prime Minister’s Office has pushed him to reflect on the relationship between the government and citizens’ expectations.
This position comes after the protest has dragged on and kept public pressure on the government alive, forcing its leader to articulate a political response before lawmakers and ministers.
Message to the Socialists: do not underestimate the discontent
In his remarks, Rama said those who have taken to the Boulevard are right, reading the protest as a sign that citizens expect more from the current government.
He signaled that comparisons with the past are no longer enough to convince the public. In his version, citizens do not want to hear where the country started from, but demand higher standards and more tangible results.
“They are demanding accountability from us more than we would like”
Rama described the situation as a phase in which citizens measure the government against their expectations and no longer against the shortcomings of the past. In essence, he acknowledged that the demand for accountability has grown and that patience for excuses has narrowed.
This is a politically weighty acknowledgment, because it shows that even the majority itself sees that the narrative of past achievements is no longer enough to soften the discontent expressed in the protest.
Rama’s warning to anyone who relativizes the protest
The strongest part of the message was the warning to anyone, inside or outside the SP, who in his view tries to relativize the protesters’ right.
“Whoever tries to relativize this right that the Boulevard showed us will shrink,” Rama said, adding that this right is greater than any individual, including himself. The statement appears to be an attempt to discipline the political reading of the protest within the majority, at a moment when public discontent can no longer be ignored so easily.
The prime minister’s statement does not change the fact that the protest stood in front of the government for weeks before this public reflection came.
Politically, Rama’s message shows that pressure from the street is forcing even the ruling majority to acknowledge that citizens are no longer asking for explanations about the past, but answers for the present.
